Hvar town is the largest settlement on the Hvar island, and is the most popular tourist destination in Croatia. It is located within the city walls under the Fortica fortress, with the oldest preserved part of town called Groda. Hvar island is known as the sunniest island, with an annual average of 2,726 hours of sun.

Stari Grad on Hvar island is Croatia’s oldest town, celebrating its 2407th birthday in 2023. As such, it bursts with archaeological sites and sacred monuments – one of the most notable being Tvrdalj Renaissance castle built in the 16th century as a summer residence of Petar Hektorović.

Vrboska is a tourst town on the Hvar island. Pjaca, the historical core of town, is located on a steep hill on the south side of a four-kilometre deep bay. The oldest building in Vrboska is the church of St. Peter built before the 14th century.

Sućuraj
The island of Hvar
The municipality of Sućuraj on Hvar island was founded by Napoleon’s decree in 1811. Its coat of arms is St. Juraj on a horse piercing a dragon. Some interesting attractions near Sućuraj are the remains of a B-24 aircraft in Neretva Canal and the remains of the steamship Dubrovnik torpedoed in 1916.

Jelsa

The town Jelsa is located on the north and south coast of the central Hvar island. Some buildings in Jelsa have been declared as protected cultural assets, notably the Illyrian-Greek fortress Tor built in the 4th century BC, and the church in Gradina.
